I started soundthing out of my deep love for female-centric music. This ranges from the 12th century's Hildegarde von Bingen, continues through the sonic Americana revolution of Mother Maybelle Carter, and includes Anne Briggs, Vashti Bunyan, Norah Jones, Kendra Smith and Joanna Newsom among many others. The river of influence runs deep and wide. Production-wise, I only hope to tread lightly in the hallowed footsteps  of my main recordist heroes, namely Curt Boettcher, Chet Atkins, Lee Hazlewood, Owen Bradley and Brian Eno.

Soundthing is a label co-op and can be viewed as a step-by-step support system for evolving female artists. It involves in-house recording on golden Class-A vintage gear, feedback and tweaking from top industry professionals, and give-away EPs and internet-only releases to generate buzz and build the fanbase. Then, for those projects that magically break through, soundthing offers full next-step support. ~Rick Babcock
